Students at Egglescliffe School, Stockton-on-Tees made a series of television adverts to challenge racism, recognise our similarities and celebrate diversity.

Here, the students tell you a little about the process of making the films.

Our Memories of Making our Films

During the Arpeggio Films project we have created five 30- second adverts on the theme of celebrating difference. We learnt about different shots, when and how to use them and how to film professionally.

Day 1

On the first morning we were introduced to how to use the cameras and began to thought-shower our ideas that would be used in future sessions. We also produced our 'profile', our target audience who consisted of a 13 year-old boy who loved football, video games and was worried about what other people thought of him. This helped us to narrow down our ideas and become more aware of what we were going to include in our adverts, all of which we aimed to raise awareness of the facts about racism and refugees.

Day 2

On the second morning we set out to refine our ideas further and prepare a storyboard of each idea to be presented to the rest of the group. After this session we decided on the ideas which we were going to make and which we needed to add more detail to for when we began filming.

Day 3

Day 3 was the first time we had a whole day to work on our ideas and filmmaking abilities. We were introduced to the microphone and the boom; we were shown how to hold it safely. We created a small film about someone who heard a noise and turned around to investigate. We then split up into teams and found out which film we were doing and developed the storyboards. We decided on locations for filming and how we would go about putting our ideas into practice. We then began casting and organised everything we would need for our shoots.

Day 4

Day 4 was our first day of filming; we first filmed the art room advert, which was about an art classroom in black and white where everyone painted the same picture. Another person then arrived in the room and painted something different, causing everyone else to paint different pictures.

In the afternoon we did the audition advert in which everyone plays the same piece of music on a recorder and the judges become bored and dismiss people before they play. Then someone plays a different instrument and wins.

Day 5

On day 5 we continued filming. In the morning we filmed the football advert about a boring, black and white football match in which a player scores, setting off a chain of events that make the match become more exciting, the dwindling crowd becoming bigger and happier. In the afternoon we filmed the bullying circle; about a circle of people each bullying the person in front for being different, they all realise that everyone is different.

Day 6

Day 6 was the first day of editing. The art room group edited first, the group doing the final advert, an animation showing refugee facts and figures, filmed. The rest of us designed sleeves for the DVD, interviewed each other and wrote these diaries. In the afternoon only the group that was editing the audition advert and the person who was doing the final sleeve design needed to return.

Day 7

On the morning of day 7 the group that was doing the football advert edited and the interviews were finished. In the afternoon commentary was recorded for the football advert, the bullying circle was edited and this diary was finished.

In conclusion

All in all we have had fun in the Arpeggio project. Will and Andrew were very helpful and we hope we get another chance to spend time filmmaking.

Student's Comments

"We have been fully engaged with the lessons. We planned, directed, filmed, edited and learnt lots of new different skills"

"In the project, we took positive risks, by bringing forward some good yet hard to film ideas, that would be hard to get right but have a good end result."

"I learnt how to do a proper storyboard and about how much effort time and skill is put into making a film!"

"I feel more comfortable about sharing my ideas. I feel that my ideas have contributed to the final outcome"
